Beware of a fake app called “SafeChat” that is circulating, which is collecting sensitive data from its users. As the name suggests, it appears to be a chatting app similar to WhatsApp, but using this app is not safe at all.

Notable Points:

  • The developers of SafeChat claim it to be completely safe, but it actually steals data from WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, and other apps.
  • It is suspected to be a variant of the spyware known as “CoverIm.”
  • Researchers from the cyber-security firm Cyfirma have discovered this Android malware.
  • If you have this app installed on your phone, uninstall it immediately.

All You Need To Know About This Fake App

Recently, the app “SafeChat” has been making headlines because researchers at Cyfirma have found that it is not legitimate, and it has been created by the hacker group APT Bahumat. This Android app is capable of stealing data from various apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber, Facebook Messenger, and Signal.

The installation link of SafeChat is being circulated on apps like WhatsApp, and users are installing it, believing it to be a legitimate app. However, once you install this app, it requests several permissions, such as call logs, SMS, location, etc. Once you grant these permissions, the app starts stealing your sensitive data.

It is suspected that this Android spyware is a variant of “CoverIm.” Hackers are targeting South Asia using this app. The interface of the app looks very genuine, leading users to consider it a trusted app. The app even has a registration process that gives users a more genuine feeling.

In 2022, the APT group named “DoNot” also created a similar fake app. Remember to never download apps from unofficial sources, especially if you don’t know much about them. Always install apps from trusted sources and stay away from such fake apps. If you have this app installed on your device, uninstall it as soon as possible.
